Airport Consultant Calls for Surveillance Upgrade By Charles R. McCauley 9/14/05 |
It will cost about $3 million to upgrade and connect
cameras and surveillance systems at Birmingham International Airport, a consultant told airport managers Monday.
Hill told a Birmingham Airport Authority committee his aviation security-consulting firm recommends installing cables for a fiber-optic network that would support other upgrades, including digital cameras. “The
surveillance network would grow with the airport,” Hill said.
The new system will include 241
fixed security cameras, 48
pan-tilt-zoom cameras, and new and additional support equipment and workstations to monitor the terminal, parking deck, remote parking lot, vehicle gates, aircraft operations areas, the perimeter and the terminal roadways.
Executive Director Al Denson said the Federal Aviation Administration, which will pay 95 percent of the project's cost, and the
Transportation Security Administration has approved the recommendations.
"Right now, the airport does not have a
comprehensive surveillance system that allows monitoring security equipment at the air cargo facility, remote parking lot and other nonterminal operations," said Hill.
