Appeal for CCTV film in tyre slasher hunt |
|
Mar 30 2005 By Samantha Nanda A senior
police officer is urging people living in Nuneaton who have protected their homes
with CCTV to hand over footage to police. Insp Mick Boissonade, from Nuneaton
police, hopes tape from private CCTV
cameras may help police net the people behind a massive tyre slashing spree
over the Easter weekend.
The slashers are thought to have hit 38 streets in Nuneaton
over the weekend, damaging about 120 vehicles. Last Thursday night, 86 cars had
tyres punctured and on Sunday night another 34 had tyres slashed in a second wave
of vandalism. Most of the vehicles attacked had more than one tyre ruined, leaving
people unable to use them or even move them without calling in a garage. Some
of the streets hit include Haunchwood Road, Merlin Avenue, Zorrina Close, Eadie
Street, Silver Walk, Home Park Road and Cox's Close. The latest vandalism follows
similar incidents in Nuneaton. In January, more than 40 cars had their tyres damaged
in the Attleborough area. And last year there were similar attacks in the Edward
Street and Abbey Green areas. Now detectives are to investigate possible links
to a similar wave of tyre slashings in Coventry. City detectives said they planned
to speak to Nuneaton police to see if the same people could be behind the vandalism.
Tyre slashings have been a problem in Coventry since November, with hundreds of
cars damaged in areas including Stoke, Walsgrave, Wyken, Ball Hill, Chapelfields
and Whoberley. Insp Boissonade urged anyone in Nuneaton with information to come
forward. He said: "We have been undertaking targeted patrols in recent weeks in
areas of West Nuneaton where there have been previous reports of damage to tyres.
"These latest reports cover a much wider area and we do appeal to anyone who may
have seen anything suspicious in the areas where damage has been reported to contact
the police. "We would also appeal to anyone who has private
CCTV in the locality where cars have suffered tyre damage to view their tapes
and contact the police if there is anything significant." Police advise motorists
who have garages to ensure their cars are put away at night. A Crimestoppers reward
of up to £1,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and charge
of those responsible. Call 0800 555111. q A 33-year-old man was arrested on Monday
on suspicion of causing criminal damage to parked vehicles in Nuneaton. He has
been released on police bail pending further enquiries. from icCoventry |
