The goal of a terrorist is to cause terror. If we give in to fear, their goal is achieved. If we refuse to be terrorized, then the ultimate loss is theirs.
The Durham Area Transit Authority has asked the city for about $161,000 to upgrade the
video cameras on city buses. DATA buses have been the target of several shootings in the past two years.
Thirty-two DATA buses have
digital cameras housed in boxes near the bus driver. But the transit authority wants to replace those with newer cameras and add cameras to the remaining 11 buses in the DATA fleet.
"The
cameras serve as a recording device. It makes our customers feel safer about their experience on the buses,"
DATA Administrator Stephen Mancuso said.
"It also comes in handy as a community service-type of device where, if the bus is involved in an accident or even if there is an accident not involving a bus, the
camera serves to record that event."
The City Council is expected to vote on the request June 20, but City Manager Patrick Baker already is on board with the idea. Source: nbc17.com
