Farrell Calls for Security Cameras at Commuter Train Stations By Tom Henry 10/17/05
This story highlights the benefits of installing a CCTV Security Camera Network on commuter trains, platforms and parking lots as an effective means of thwarting terrorist plots.

Candidate Diane Farrell renewed her call last week for the installation of security cameras in Connecticut 's commuter train stations in the wake of reports that security has been stepped up on the New York City subway system as a result of credible terrorist threats.

Farrell originally proposed the installation of a video security network for the Westport train station and all along the Metro-North Line on July 17.

"Surveillance Cameras on our railroad platforms and in the parking lots would be an effective tool in the fight against terrorism and would help to protect the tens of thousands of Connecticut residents who ride the rails everyday," said Farrell. "At the very least, if the unthinkable were to happen, surveillance cameras can be a valuable tool in helping authorities to piece together what happened and track and identify suspects."

"We must do everything within our power to attack terrorism at its roots to stop attacks before they occur. At the same time, we must put into place systems, like video surveillance in rail stations, which can provide invaluable assistance to law enforcement to help prevent terrorist attacks or track down suspects if an incident were to occur," added Farrell.

News reports Tuesday indicated that informants in Iraq, who initially warned American officials of a threat against New York City Subways, had admitted that they had perpetrated a hoax.

Officials of the Federal Department of Homeland Security had said they doubted all along the credibility of the threat against the subways, but New York City officials acted on the safe side by stepping up security on the subways over the weekend.

Farrell, a Democrat, has created a committee to raise funds for a campaign against Republican Congressman Christopher Shays, who defeated her by a few percentage points in the 2004 election.
