Newsflash
The goal of a terrorist is to cause terror. If we give in to fear, their goal is achieved. If we refuse to be terrorized, then the ultimate loss is theirs.

Jeanine Pirro and our Privacy

"Marcis Pappas, of the New York state chapter of NOW, said her group supports Jeanine Pirro "completely for fighting back on this intrusion."

"It's absolutely horrendous the government would intrude on anyone's life in this way," she said. "They are targeting her because she is a woman. If anyone believes in the right to privacy, they should be enraged by the behavior by our government."

Oddly enough, I don't find the leak surprising - it's politicals afterall. Neither do I buy into the "she's a woman argument". However, what I do find surprising is the general misinformation that takes place, the lack of knowledge. Sitting in the train today, surrounded by a party of two men and three women discussing the investigation, I found myself having to interject to both correct and provide factual information.

The general consensus, is that the laws for both surveillance cameras and tape recorders are the same - when it simply isn't true. Alhough it is legal to install surveillance cameras in places where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy - the same is not true for voice/tape recorders. Participants of the conversation must know they're being recorded.

Wouldn't it be great if instead of having the news stations fixate on the trials of the Pirro's or on the latest "color alert", they would instead do something beneficial for the American people. Say, I don't know, educate them on their rights.

As for Jeanine Pirro, she will continue in the race for attorney general and will launch a federal investigation to discern who leaked these top secret conversations. As for the allegations, Pirro said that she had talked with the police commissioner about her desire to tape her husband, but denied any taking took place.

Phishing is on the Rise

The Anti-Phishing Working group is reporting a new record - 154 banks, financial companies and electronic retailers had their brands hijacked through phishing in July 2006. They also report to have found over 23,000 phishing websites used to commit identity theft, fraud and other malicious activity in that one month alone.

The report analyzes the rapidly growing trend of phishing as a common way to steal banking and financial information from uninformed victims. Most phishing messages are sent by e-mail, a transport protocol known as SMTP that has changed little since 1982. The phishing e-mails are sent using spam distribution methods and employ social engineering to convince a user to visit a fake website and divulge private information. A number of phishing websites are in fact legitimate servers that were compromised through software vulnerabilities, exploited by hackers and covertly turned into illegal phishing sites - making the hackers more difficult to track.

Security Cameras in NYC Clubs

City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, a leading proponent of gay rights and marriage, proposed last week that the city’s 250 nightclubs be required to install security cameras at their entrances and exits. Critics argue that the cameras would invade their privacy and expose those that aren't open about their sexual orientation. It would also lead to a distrust of the clubbing scene - "it will have an impact on everybody who enjoys NYC nightlife", said William K. Dobbs.

While the details of the proposal have yet to be worked out, it would apply to nightclubs that operate with city-issued cabaret licenses that allow dancing. If the nightclub owners refused to comply, their licenses could be suspended or revoked.

Ms. Quinn contends that the owners should install the security cameras to protect their patrons and help deter crime in and around the clubs. In recent months, bars and nightclubs have drawn increased scrutiny because of the separate murders of two young women after nights of drinking and partying in Manhattan. A club bouncer has been charged in one of those murders.

Mr. Roskoff, President of the Jim Owles Democratic Club, believes he speaks on behalf of the larger community when he said “when you go out at night, I think you have the right to be anonymous,” he said. “Not everybody’s out of the closet, and therefore it’s an invasion of privacy.”

“Many people might reasonably fear retaliation if a picture of them in a gay club were splashed across the Internet or the pages of their local paper,” said Christopher Dunn, associate legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. “If the city intends to require videotaping, there must be strict privacy protections.”
