Lucknow Univ seeks to curb cheating menace by Aradhana Sharma |
|
Lucknow University has been infamous for cheating during examinations
under the patronage of student leaders. This year the new Vice Chancellor in an
effort to change this has come up with new measures. The latest addition to classrooms
in the Lucknow university are 20 CCTV
cameras installed to deter students from cheating during exams.
Under pressure
But after just three days the cameras had to be switched off. The reason was pressure
from student union leaders who say the move will adversely affect students. "If
the students go back on their word and try to create problems during examinations
or help in cheating, we will immediately activate the cameras so that we can have
all the records," said R P Singh, VC, Lucknow University. Other measures taken
to stop cheating have also been diluted. Students who had earlier been prohibited
from entering the campus have now been allowed to come inside for a few hours
everyday. The students however, say little has changed. "How does
installing the camera help if the teachers do not come and take classes," said
Ashish Mishra, student. Lucknow University's image had taken a beating due to
indiscriminate cheating and indiscipline during examinations. This time the authorities
have come up with new measures to check the menace but the important thing to
be seen is just how long with this last. There is constant pressure from student
leaders who are more interested in politics than in academics. from NDTV |
