Memphis Airport Adopts Security Surveillance System 6/21/05 |
In an effort to keep travelers safe,
Memphis International Airport will install a closed circuit video surveillance system along 34,000 feet of its perimeter, designed to detect anyone attempting to sneak into the airport.
Besides fencing, the airports main security comes from roving foot and vehicle patrols. The new system being installed, by ObjectVideo of Reston, Va., is a "force multiplier" says airport safety director Walter White. It will provide 100% perimeter coverage 24-hours a day.
The system also will secure the airport's runways and grounds against intrusions by people on foot or in a vehicle, even during nighttime, poor weather and limited visibility conditions.
ObjectVideo's system of
cameras and software uses artificial intelligence, to identify, track and analyze potential threats. It compares everything the
camera detects against threat-specific pre-programmed rules. If a person or vehicle enters an off-limits area, or merely lingers nearby, the system will alert security staff by pager, e-mail or at a base station.
ObjectVideo has also been adopted by Miami International Airport, Key West International Airport and Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. Versions of it are also used at borders, seaports, oil refineries and chemical and nuclear plants.
