Recent data indicates a significant decrease over the past few years in the interception of narcotics and the identification of fraudulent immigration documents, especially at airports.
Nevada AG Says Taxi Surveillance Cameras, Recordings are Legal 10/10/05
LAS VEGAS The Nevada State Taxicab Authority says it'll go ahead and draft new regulations for
surveillance cameras in taxicabs now that the state attorney general's office has said video and some audio recording is legal.
A spokesman says a new law could be in place by the end of the year.
But the A-C-L-U in Nevada says it's opposed to allowing audio recordings and
video surveillance. It says that's too much of an invasion of privacy.
The State Legislature voted early this year against allowing audio recordings in cabs.
But most on the authority board say they favor finding a way to protect cab drivers.
Some companies haven't waited for a rule to be enacted.
By some estimates, about half of all taxis in the Las Vegas area already have
surveillance cameras.
