West Ottawa Upgrades Video Surveillance System By By Kym Reinstadler 10/19/05
This story focuses on the benefits of installing a video surveillance system in schools to protect students, teachers and school property from harm.

HOLLAND — The new West Ottawa High School Campus has an advanced video surveillance system that already is being expanded and improved.

On Monday the school board approved a recommendation to spend $20,000 on additional security cameras to keep an eye on the exteriors of the North and South buildings, particularly the sidewalk between the two schools.

West Ottawa already has 130 video surveillance cameras strategically placed in its four secondary schools: North, South, Macatawa Bay and Harbor Lights.

The surveillance cameras at the two middle schools have been in operation for seven years.

The new security system on the high school campus records in 24-hour cycles, then compresses the video to show only the motion. At least 30 days' worth of digitally recorded video from each camera will be available to district administrators in a Windows-based program.

"This will be an important investigatory tool for establishing what happened and pinpointing when it happened," said David Zimmer, assistant superintendent for business.

"Images will not be monitored from most of the security cameras unless there is a problem to explore," Zimmer said.

“Receptionists inside each high school also will monitor images from surveillance cameras at entry and exit points of gated parking lots,” Zimmer said.
