Wilkes-Barre Area School District plans security cameras for GAR |
|
Security cameras
will soon be installed in GAR Memorial High School.
The Wilkes-Barre Area School
District is accepting bids for cameras that are to be installed in the high school's
hallways, said Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Namey, Advertisement Click Here! Outfitting
the school's halls with security
cameras will cost about $100,000, Namey said. The cameras should help deter
hallway mischief, he said. In addition, if something is stolen from the school,
the cameras make it easier to capture the thief, he said. "Students who follow
the rules are supportive of them," Namey said, adding there has been very little
resistance to the surveillance
cameras in the district. It was not immediately clear Tuesday if the cameras
would be monitored full-time or if the tapes would only be reviewed after an incident.
Also, it was not clear where the monitors would be placed in the school. "Obviously,
they need to be in a place where they cannot be seen by the public," said school
board member Charles Luce. The district's other high schools have the cameras
and they have been "very effective and very successful," Namey said. The cameras
should be installed for the new school year, Namey said. "They provide an extra
layer of security and safety," he said. From The
